How to Set Up a DTF Gang Sheet in Canva

Canva is an incredibly user-friendly tool for designing apparel, but when it comes to Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing, file resolution is everything. If your artwork isn't set up correctly, your printed shirts could come out blurry or pixelated.
To ensure a crisp, vibrant, and professional print, your Canva gang sheets must be saved as high-resolution files. Follow this simple guide to set up your gang sheet flawlessly.
Step 1: Choose Your Sheet Size
Before opening Canva, you need to know how much space you have to work with. At DTFXpress, we offer standard transfer film sizes that are 550mm wide by various lengths:
|

Step 2: Create a Custom Canvas Size
Because Canva has pixel limitations for exceptionally long designs, the best trick to achieve a true 300 DPI print is to set your canvas dimensions using inches or millimeters accurately from the start.
- Log into Canva and click Create a design in the top right corner.
- Select Custom size.
- Change the unit dropdown from pixels (px) to mm or inches.
- Enter your desired size (for example, Width: 550 and Height: 1500 for a 1.5-meter sheet).
- Click Create new design.
Step 3: Arrange Graphics and "Fill Your Space"
One of the best advantages of DTF printing is the ability to pack your canvas with as many designs as you want. Your price per meter remains exactly the same whether you print one giant logo or fifty small ones!
Checklist for Arranging Your Artwork:
- High-Quality Uploads Only: Ensure the individual logos you upload into Canva are high-resolution PNG files or clean vector graphics. Do not use low-res JPEGs, as they cannot be printed clearly.
- Leave Breathing Room: Leave a gap of at least 5mm to 10mm between each graphic. This gives you enough safety space to cut out the individual transfers with scissors once you receive your roll.
- Check for Transparency: Ensure your individual design elements have transparent backgrounds. Any hidden white blocks around your logo will print as solid white ink!
Step 4: Exporting for 300 DPI Quality
Once you are happy with your layout, it is time to export. This is where many creators make a mistake, resulting in low-res files.
⚠️ Critical Requirement: Gang sheets created in Canva must be saved as a PNG file at 300 DPI to ensure printing viability.
How to export correctly:
- Click Share in the top right corner of Canva.
- Click Download.
- Change the File Type to PNG.
- Check the box for Transparent background (this is vital so your background doesn't print as solid white).
- Boost the Size Slider: To ensure your output hits that golden 300 DPI threshold, drag Canva’s size slider up (we recommend sliding it to 2x or 3x size to maximize resolution).
- Click Download.
